International ground engineering specialist Keller Group has secured a major contract worth £28m at Singapore's Changi Airport.

This contract requires Keller Group to carry out vibrocompaction of the ground as part of the land preparation works for a major expansion of the airport. This is a ground improvement technique that densifies clean, cohesionless granular soils by means of a downhole vibrator.

The CEO of Keller Justin Atkinson said: "This contract award reflects both the group's excellent track record using vibrocompaction in Singapore and extensive experience in similar airport construction projects around the world, including previously at Changi."

Changi Airport will expand its Terminal 1, as well as create a mixed-use complex called Project Jewel, featuring attractions, shops, a hotel and operations facilities.

Project Jewel will cover a total gross floor area of approximately 134,000m² and will involve the construction of a glass and steel dome-shaped space that will feature airport operations, hotel facilities, indoor gardens and retail stores.

The airport recently broke ground on the £726m terminal project, which is a joint venture between the Changi Airport Group (CAG) and CapitaMalls Asia, CapitaLand's shopping mall division.
